T'Laan's team comes to the aid of the
Slayton, lost in space a century ago.
Story Summary
The appearance of the cadet ship ends the
mutiny on the Slayton, and the two crews formulate a
plan to return to normal space by blowing up the warp core of
the cadet ship so the
Slayton can ride the propulsion wave out of the
temporal anomaly. The attempt is successful and the cadet team
is awarded the highest honor any cadets have ever received.
T'Laan decides to remain at Starfleet
Academy rather than transfer to New Vulcan. Shortly after
reaching her decision, she is contacted by Lt. Uhura from the
Enterprise who eagerly wants to learn the whole story of how
T'Laan and her friends solved the mystery of the
Slayton, first touched upon by Uhura as a cadet
a few years before.

Didja Know?
The issues of this series did not have individual issue titles.
I assigned
"The Rescue" as the title of this issue
due to the rescue of the long-lost Slayton that occurs
here.
Didja Notice?
On page 10, the compression wave generated by the explosion
of the cadet ship's warp core strikes the Slayton's
shields with two hundred teratons of force. A teraton is the
equivalent force of one trillion tons of TNT.
The USS Wilson that rendezvous with the Slayton
is a previously unknown starship of the fleet. Its class is
also unknown.
For the discovery and rescue of the Slayton,
T'Laan's team are awarded medals of the "highest honor any
cadet has ever received." But the medal is not named!
On page 16, Lucia tells Shev he has the social skills of a
Khonodian Wertz Hound. This appears to be the first mention
of such a creature.
On page 18, T'Laan apologizes to Professor Trumble for being
late, as Cadets Cory and Sears were teaching her the
rudiments of an archaic Earth game called ultimate frisbee.
Ultimate frisbee is a sport popular on college campuses in
the United States since the 1960s, later spreading to other
countries as well. The sport is a sort of combination of
basketball, football, and soccer, played with a frisbee
instead of a ball.
Page 19 implies that Cadet Chen is
from Taiwan. It also implies that Lucia's family lives in
Columbia, though her Cadet File entry in
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #4 stated that Barcelona,
Spain was her home city.
In panel 1 of page 19, notice that T'Laan's recently-won
medal is sitting on a shelf in her room in the background.
Page 19 reveals that Shev and Vel are using their time off
to take a road trip to
Los Angeles.
