Didja Know?
The mirror universe depicted in this 3-part
story does not appear to be the same one seen in the "imaginary
story" told by Scotty to McCoy in
"Mirrored" Parts 1 and 2.
Didja Notice?
This issue opens on stardate 2263.27. The last confirmed
stardate in this series was 2262.54, in
"The Tholian Webs" Part 1, meaning this issue takes
place over 6 months later. This also places it well into the
3rd year of the Enterprise's 5-year mission (though
the "Previously in Star Trek..." paragraph on the
inside front cover of this issue states it is midway through
their 5-year voyage).
An unusual kind of ion storm seemingly throws the
Enterprise
hundreds of light years from their previous position (the
ship was actually transported to a mirror universe) near
Ceti Alpha V in the Ceti Alpha system. In the original
ST timeline, a landing party to the Halkan homeworld
composed of Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura was transported
to a similar mirror universe due to the presence of an ion
storm in the original series episode "Mirror, Mirror". Also
in the original timeline, Ceti Alpha V is the planet where
Kirk exiled Khan and his followers in the episode "Space
Seed".
The fourth member of the landing party with Kirk, McCoy, and
Uhura is Lt. Zahra, though she is not stated by name until
"LiveEvil" Part 2.
She has been seen in several previous issues.
Mirror-Khan is depicted in the likeness of actor Benedict
Cumberbatch, who played Khan in Into Darkness.
But, "Khan" Part 1 showed that
he received this likeness surgically when he agreed to become an agent
for Starfleet's black ops division, Section 31; before that
his original features were those of the late actor Ricardo
Montalbán, who portrayed Khan in the ST-TOS episode "Space
Seed" and the movie Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
So, did the mirror Khan also agree to work for Section 31 at
some point? It's not mentioned within this 3-part storyline.
On page 9, mirror-Khan refers to his settlement on Ceti
Alpha V as the Augment Colony. Khan and his
genetically-enhanced followers were referred to as Augments.
The mirror-Enterprise seen
here
is black in color, similar to the U.S.S. Vengeance
in Into Darkness.
It has registration number ICC-1701 instead of the NCC-1701
of the Federation's Enterprise.
Mirror-Science
Officer 0718 has reddish eyes instead of white ones.
Mirror-Kirk meets up with Mirror-Harry Mudd on the trading
planet Arronia Two at the end of the issue. Harry Mudd
appeared in the original series episodes "Mudd's Women" and
"I, Mudd", as well as the animated series episode "Mudd's
Passion". He also appeared in several stories published in
ST novels and comics.
Notes from the article "Continuing Voyages in a
Four-Color Frontier"
An article at the end of this special 50th issue of the
comic book, "Continuing Voyages in a
Four-Color Frontier", reveals that the dead tribble that
McCoy resurrects with Khan's blood in
Into Darkness is the
same tribble that died of old age in sickbay in
"The Truth About
Tribbles" Part 2.
