The tattoos that Nero and his crew receive never quite match
what is seen in the Star Trek movie, nor what is seen
issue-to-issue of the Countdown and Nero
comic book mini-series, or even page-to-page!
On page 3, panel 2, the computer displays visible on the
bridge of the Romulan mining ship Narada appear to
be Starfleet designs, not Romulan!
The Federation medical frigates that arrive in Romulan space
to assist the survivors appear to be Olympic-class
ships as seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation
episode "All Good Things..." and the Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine episode "Sacrifice of Angels".
After the ruling council is discovered in a Senate shuttle
having escaped the destruction of Romulus, on page 6 the
Praetor holds the Debrune teral'n, an ancient bladed weapon
that is the greatest symbol of the Empire. A teral'n has not
been seen in Star Trek before this, but the Debrune were
described in the
Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Gambit"
Part 1 as an ancient offshoot of the Romulans. It seems odd
that a weapon used by an offshoot of the Romulans would be
the Empire's greatest symbol and not a weapon developed by
the original Romulans themselves.
Page 7 depicts the crew of the Narada getting
tattoos burned onto their heads. They are from a tradition
on Romulus that, when a loved one dies, ancient symbols of
love and loss are painted on your skin as a sign of your
grief; when the paint finally fades away, your period of
mourning is over and life can go on. Captain Nero has the
symbols permanently tattooed onto every crewmember so that the mourning
of Romulus and their loved ones can never end, life can not go
on. Only revenge is left.
On page 9, Spock comments to the Vulcan High Council on an
old comrade of his, a young Federation captain who would
often enact high-risk plans based on what his gut told him
to do. Obviously this is a reference to Captain Kirk.
Page 12 reveals that the mining vessel Narada was
retrofitted with Borg technology that was being
back-engineered and developed by the secret Romulan military
facility called the Vault. The Vault is a Romulan space
station that first appeared in the Star Trek: Online
MMORPG.
Page 13 reveals that the Jellyfish prototype ship was
designed by Geordi La Forge, former chief engineer of
Enterprise-D and -E, after he left Starfleet to become
a freelance starship designer.
On page 16, Geordi discusses with Data some of the past
"impossible dilemmas" they faced and overcame in their time
aboard the Enterprise. Mentioned are: Locutus (a
Borgified Captain Picard in the ST-TNG 2-part episode "The Best of
Both Worlds"), Lore (Data's evil older brother who appeared
in several episodes of
ST-TNG), Devidia II (a world of time-travelling
aliens who threatened Earth in the two-part episode "Time's
Arrow"), and Q (a nearly omnipotent, godlike being who
harassed the crew of the Enterprise, particularly
Captain Picard, numerous times throughout the ST-TNG
series).
The last page of the issue depicts Worf, formerly a
Starfleet officer who served with distinction, as a general
in the Klingon Empire.
