On page 3, Emma calls the Wash robot "Washbot" and both Zoe and
the robot seem to accept that as his new name, for lack of a
better one.
On page 4, Jayne and River discover three
M1911 Colt government pistols on the corpses of the dead men and
women who attacked them on Earth-That-Was. This is a real world
weapon, the M1911 semi-automatic pistol designed by John
Browning in 1911 and still in use by many civilians and military
personnel throughout the world today.
On page 5, Simon refers to the ships
that brought people from Earth to the 'Verse during the original
exodus as "arkships".
On page 13, Washbot reports that Serenity has passed
over the small towns of
Kadoka,
Murdo, and
Chamberlain (in South Dakota) and that he is hoping to get
them to
Minneapolis (Minnesota). On page 17, Washbot sets the ship
down in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota instead, as he has discovered that
it was the home of the Midwest regional headquarters of
Washburne Industries, a manufacturer of kitchen appliances. The
Washburne Industries mentioned here is surely fictitious, but
there is an actual small company by that name based in Seattle,
Washington, offering computer programming services.
On page 21, Serenity is fired upon by a
Chambers-Guang 899ER with a second gen Balaton harpoon. This
according to Mal's identification of the weapon.
