Indy visits Tangiers in 1908...where slavery is still an accepted institution.

Read the "August 1908" entry of the It’s Not the Years, It’s the Mileage Indiana Jones chronology for a summary of this episode

Notes from the Indiana Jones chronology

This episode takes place in summer 1908, shortly after "My First Adventure".

Didja Know?

I've given this episode the title of "The Human Spirit" from dialog spoken by Miss Seymour about the evils of slavery in this episode.

This "episode" was filmed to become the second hour of the TV movie The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: My First Adventure in 1996. Little Indy actor Corey Carrier has noticeably grown in the few years since the previous episode, "My First Adventure", making his stature incongruous since these events supposedly take place almost immediately after that episode.

Notes from the Old Indy bookends of The Young Indiana Chronicles

This "episode" was filmed to become the second hour of the TV movie The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: My First Adventure in 1996. Because of this, there were no Old Indy bookends filmed for it.

Notes from The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones

The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones is a 2008 publication that purports to be Indy's journal as seen throughout The Young Indiana Chronicles and the big screen Indiana Jones movies. The publication is also annotated with notes from a functionary of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation, the successor agency of the Soviet Union's KGB. The FSB relieved Indy of his journal in 1957 during the events of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The notations imply the journal was released to other governments by the FSB in the early 21st Century. However, some bookend segments of The Young Indiana Chronicles depict Old Indy still in possession of the journal in 1992. The discrepancy has never been resolved.

The journal as published skips over this time in Indy's life. In fact, it goes from May 1908 to September 1909...over a year! Are we to believe that Indy made no journal entries that entire time? Perhaps the entries were excised by the Russians for some reason when it was in their possession?

Didja Notice?

Indy and his family visit the Moroccan city of Tangiers.

Henry Sr. tells Indy, and we see evidence of it here, that slavery still exists in Morocco of 1908. I've been unable to confirm whether slavery still existed as a public institution in the nation at that time or not.

Henry Sr. briefly misplaces his notebook, which had his lecture for the sultan, on the ship during the trip to Tangiers. The sultan of Morocco in 1908 was Abd al-Hafid (1875-1937).

The Jones family stays with Henry Sr.'s old friend Walter Harris, a journalist for the London Times. Harris (1866-1933) was a real world journalist known for his work covering the nation of Morocco. Henry says they were students together, yet they would have grown up in different areas of the UK (Scotland and London) and they attended different universities (Oxford for Henry and Cambridge for Harris), so it seems unlikely they could have been student colleagues.

Harris takes the Jones' to meet the Sharifa of Jebel, a British expatriate named Emily Keene. Though as far as I can tell the city of Jebel is fictitious, Keene (1849-1944) was a real world woman who married the Sharif of Ouazzane in 1873, but they divorced before the Sharif's death in 1891 and she remained unmarried thereafter. I guess, in the Indiana Jones universe, Keene remarried, this time to the Sharif of the fictitious Jebel!

The city where the Sharifa lives was filmed at the Aït Benhaddou fortified village in Morocco. The river the Jones' cross to get there is the Ounila River.

As they walk through the bazaar at 44:53 on the DVD, Indy jumps into a mud puddle and inadvertently splatters his father's suit vest with mud. But if you watch carefully in the seconds before the event, you can spot that Henry's vest already has the stain on it!

The lizard Indy finds inside the garden of the Sharif is a chameleon.

Indy tells Omar how he has a friend who rode through Egypt on a bicycle and how he had gone on an archaeological dig with him. He is referring to T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), whom he met in "My First Adventure".

When Omar asks Indy what an archaeologist is, Indy says, "It's like someone who travels around the world looking for lost civilizations." That is, of course, an extremely oversimplified view of what archaeologists do, but it does kind of suggest the type of archaeologist Indy will become, more of an explorer and adventurer looking for lost ruins and precious relics of ancient times!

After Indy and Omar are captured to be sold at a slave auction, the bidding is in rials. The rial was a unit of currency in Morocco from 1882-1921.
