Website hosting fees are becoming more expensive every year. Hosting fees used to be reasonable, but the market has changed to where the first year is fine, but after that fees start to soar, and changing hosts frequently is a tedious and time-consuming process. And, unfortunately, the site ads aren't covering it. If you can, please consider a small donation to PopApostle with the PayPal button below...any amount is appreciated. Thank you!

If donations are strong enough, I will eliminate the site ads.
Besides the ongoing studies already progressing, coming soon to PopApostle, Space: 1999!

Indy and Edith are slowly being lowered towards a pit of molten gold!

Notes from the Indiana Jones chronology

This story takes place not long after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark, in 1936, and opens immediately after the events of "The Ikons of Ikammannen". At about two-thirds of the way through the issue, Indy and Edith are said to have spent one month aboard a German U-boat after an ocean rescue before being returned to a point about one kilometer off the coast of New York City and given a dingy to make it to shore. If PopApostle's assumption that Raiders of the Lost Ark ends on about June 1, this issue probably ends some time in late July.

Didja Know?

The creators of this issue use pseudonyms for their first names as a play on Indiana's name, probably assuming that he was named for the state (it was not revealed that "Indiana" was a name borrowed from the Jones family's pet dog until 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). The creators' actual names are Denny O'Neil, John Byrne, Terry Austin, Bob Sharen, and Janice Chiang.

Notes from The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones

The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones is a 2008 publication that purports to be Indy's journal as seen throughout The Young Indiana Chronicles TV series and the big screen Indiana Jones movies. The publication is also annotated with notes from a functionary of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation, the successor agency of the Soviet Union's KGB security agency. The KGB relieved Indy of his journal in 1957 during the events of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The notations imply the journal was released to other governments by the FSB in the early 21st Century. However, some bookend segments of The Young Indiana Chronicles depict Old Indy still in possession of the journal in 1992. The discrepancy has never been resolved.

The journal as published does not mention the events of this issue, going from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1936 to Indy's recovery of the Cross of Coronado in 1938 in The Last Crusade.

Didja Notice?

On page 7, Indy and Edith attempt to flee from the attacking islanders and Indy tells her they'll have to "make it up as we go along." This is a callback to a line of his in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The German U-boat that "rescues" Indy and Edith is U-501. There was no German U-boat by that designation at the time, though such a vessel was constructed in 1940 and launched in 1941.

After the German U-boat drops Indy and Edith off in a dinghy off the coast of New York, the pair head that afternoon to Idlewild Airport to board what may be a Ford Trimotor aeroplane, registration number (seen on page 17) PRN8. This would not have been a legitimate registration number for the time, as it should be letters only and be in the format of A-BCDE. And, while Idlewild was an actual airport, it did not even begin construction until 1943!

While the narrative box of panel 1 on page 16 correctly spells the name of the airport as "Idlewild", the sign on the hangar in the background of this panel incorrectly spells it "Idlewilde".

On page 16, Edith remarks that radio, movie newsreels, and Life magazine will be there for the dedication of her museum ikon exhibit.
